4 Types of Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin has become a catch-all term for many skin reactions and types. Sensitive skin is mostly associated with skin that becomes irritated by or is allergic to the various products that it comes into contact with. Skin is also sometimes classified as sensitive when it develops rashes due to environmental factors such as plants or foods.

Most sensitive skin can fall into one of the following four categories:

  • Acne
  • Rosacea
  • Burning and stinging
  • Contact dermatitis

These four types of sensitive skin have one major characteristic in common: they are all characterized by inflammation. There is a lot of evidence that supports the belief that acne and rosacea are hereditary conditions. Dermatologists don’t know the inherent cause of burning and stinging skin, but they can test for it relatively easily by purposefully inducing a stinging sensation a patient’s skin using lactic acid. Contact dermatitis has two subcategories, allergies and irritants. Contact with allergens or irritants can cause severe rashes and even blisters.

Generally, products intended for use with sensitive skin will contain fewer ingredients and have less fragrance or perfume, which are known to irritate skin. Sensitive skincare products should NOT contain alcohol, antibacterial, or deodorant ingredients.

In order to care for patients with sensitive skin, dermatologists determine the type of sensitive skin they have and recommend products made for that specific type of sensitivity.
